Bill on Police Pension Board scales second reading in the Senate.
A bill for the establishment of a Police Pension Board (SB.294) of 2024 has been read for the second time in the upper legislative chamber today, Thursday, July 4th, 2024.
Distinguished Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe, representing Adamawa South in the Senate who presented the lead debate, said “The police whose duty is to protect lives and properties of citizens, does not enjoy pension benefits as obtained in other security agencies such as the Armed Forces, DSS, DIA, and the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA)”.
In the lead debate, Senator Yaroe maintained that “the broad objective of the Police Pension Scheme, is to boost equality, equity, and justice in the payment of pensions between the police and her sister agencies to enhance the standard of living of retired personnel of the NPF”.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, after the second reading, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Police Affairs to report back to the Senate within four weeks.
It could be recalled that the bill seeking to establish the NPF Pension Board and other related matters was read for the first time on March 19th, 2024, sponsored by Senator Binos Yaroe.
The Nigeria Police Force is the principal law enforcement and security agency in Nigeria, designated by the country’s 1999 constitution as the ‘National Police of Nigeria’ with jurisdiction throughout the country.
